Uttarakhand owes its existence to statehood martyrs: CM Dhami

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said that the separate State Uttarakhand was created due to the sacrifice and efforts of the martyrs. He said that the statehood activists had to endure many tortures and atrocities during the statehood movement.

 The CM participated in a programme organized in memory of the martyrs of statehood movement at Shaheed Sthal in Rampur Tiraha, Muzaffarnagar, (UP) on Wednesday. Paying glowing tributes to the martyrs, the CM announced that the statues of all the martyrs of the Rampur Tiraha firing incident will be installed at Shahid Sthal. He also laid the foundation stone of the statue of Mahavir Sharma, who donated land for the Shahid Sthal.

The CM said that the Rampur Tiraha incident is the most brutal chapter of the statehood movement.   No Uttarakhand resident can forget the atrocities on the agitators who were heading to Delhi to register their protest in a peaceful manner, he said.

The CM said that statehood activists had sacrificed their present for the creation of Uttarakhand state and for its better future and the people of the State will always remain indebted to them. 

He averred that the women of the State also participated enthusiastically in the statehood movement.  Dhami said that the state government is making every possible effort to fulfill the ideals and dreams of the statehood martyred.  He said that the State government has implemented 10 per cent horizontal reservation in government jobs for the statehood activists and their dependents. The government is also disbursing pension to the families of martyred statehood activists and those who went to jail and got injured during the movement.

The CM the idea of a separate state also includes the concern to preserve the demography of Uttarakhand and the State government dedicated to this. A strict anti-conversion law has been implemented in the state and the State government is removing encroachments from the government land. So far more than 5,000 acres of government land has been freed from encroachment, he said. 

Dhami added that the State has implemented Uniform Civil Code (UCC) with the aim of giving equal rights to every citizen and stringent land laws will be enacted soon.

Former CM Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that the women of Uttarakhand played an active role in the statehood movement. The union minister of state (independent charge) Kapil Dev and others attended the programme.
