Vijay Diwas symbol of valour, sacrifice of Indian army: Governor

A wreath laying ceremony was organised by the Uttarakhand sub area command of the Indian Army at Shaurya Sthal to mark the 52 anniversary of the Vijay Diwas on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, the governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said that the Vijay Diwas is a symbol of valour, courage and bravery of the Indian army. He said that the Indian army wrote a new saga of its bravery and sacrifice on December 16, 1971. The governor said that an indebted nation remembers the extraordinary bravery exhibited by the armed forces on this day. The saga of valour of our armed forces makes every countryman proud, he added. 

General Officer Commanding, Uttarakhand Sub Area major general R Prem Raj, rear admiral LS Pathania, Indian Navy and armed forces veterans paid homage to the fallen soldiers on the occasion. The ceremony was also attended by serving officers, JCOs and other ranks of the Dehradun station who resolved to emulate the heroic soldiers for the honour of the country.

The day marks historic victory of Indian armed forces over Pakistan in the 1971 war. On December 16, 1971, Indian armed forces under the dynamic leadership of general SFHJ Manekshaw, the then COAS, gave a crushing defeat to the Pakistan army and paved the way for liberation of East Pakistan to form the new country of Bangladesh.
