Village in Joshimath threatened by landslide debris

More than 30 families in Pagno village in Joshimath area are at risk due to landslide occurring for the past few days above the village. The Shiva temple in the village has been damaged while the primary school in the village is also at risk. The students of this school have been shifted to the junior high school since Tuesday, Since the junior high school is located about a kilometre away the children are facing inconvenience in reaching and returning from the school.
It should be mentioned here that Pagno village has been witnessing landslide since the previous year. Debris along with water from uphill is flowing down into the village. The consistent rainfall being experienced in the region these days has increased the risk being faced by the village. Villager Badri Sundriyal said that two homes in the village have been damaged by the landslide so far. The Shiva temple in the village has also been damaged with the Shivling being buried in debris. The authorities have so far not taken any action for relocation of the villagers to a safer location, he said. The sub divisional magistrate Kumkum Joshi said that the administration has made arrangements for tents in secure locations for the affected families of the village. Meanwhile, the district Panchayat member Surat Sailani submitted a memorandum to the Chamoli district magistrate demanding that the families affected or threatened by the landslide should be shifted to safer locations.
