Volunteers for literacy campaign to be called when needed
In the backdrop of Dehradun district administration entrusting the responsibility of educating illiterate in the district to some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) under its Padho Doon Badho Doon literacy campaign, those who have registered to be volunteers in the campaign for the teaching purposes will now be called only as per the requirement.
This was stated by the chief development officer (CDO) Nitika Khandelwal. She disclosed that as many as 15 NGOs including Azim Premji Foundation, Room To Read and Aasra Trust among others are currently working under this campaign across the district, which is being held under supervision of chief education officer (CEO) of Dehradun Asha Rani Painuly.
Asha Painuly also disclosed that the classes for illiterate had already commenced from August and a set of books was also been given to every student as part of this campaign. She informed that there are about 22,723 residents registered as illiterates in the district on the basis of the survey conducted by Anganwadi workers. At present, there are around 12,488 illiterates in the district who are studying under this campaign while the remaining 9826 illiterates are yet to begin their classes. The officials informed that on the basis of the survey, most of illiterates were found in Doiwala area which were about 6,728 people while the minimum illiterate residents were found in Chakrata area which were about 766 people.
Meanwhile, the district administration had asked people to contribute to this campaign by volunteering to teach the uneducated locals of the district and many locals had registered for the same but not everyone was called by the administration. Referring to this, the CDO informed that 15 NGOs are teaching local residents under this campaign presently but the other volunteers will be asked to join if there will be a requirement. She said that there are still many locals left to educate in the district under this campaign and the administration will probably need them too, so those who want to volunteer should register themselves in the Dehradun Smart City Limited (DSCL) portal.
It is pertinent to mention here that the district administration has set the target to eradicate illiteracy from the Dehradun district by January 26, 2021 and the officials are optimistic that they will achieve this goal on time.
