Voting for urban local bodies’ election on January 23 in Uttarakhand

The voting for the urban local bodies (ULB) elections in Uttarakhand will be held on January 23. The counting of the votes will be done on January 25 and the results are expected on the same day. The notifications for the ULB elections were issued by the Urban Development department and the State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday afternoon following which the model code of conduct (MCC) was imposed in the municipal limits of all the 100 ULBs where the elections will be held. 

Announcing the dates, the State election commissioner Sushil Kumar said that the candidates can purchase their nomination papers from December 27 to December 30. The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be done on December 31 and January 1 and the symbols will be allotted on January 3.

 The SEC informed that 30,83,500 (15,89,467 male and 14,93,519 female) voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the election. He said that 1,518 polling stations and 3,393 polling booths will be set up for the elections and out of them 601 polling stations and 1,292 polling booths are sensitive. Similarly, 422 polling stations and 1,078 polling stations have been declared ultrasensitive.

Kumar said that the number of voters in ULBs Of Uttarakhand has increased by about five lakh in the last six years. He said that a special revision of electoral rolls was undertaken recently in which 10,328 new voters were added. The SEC said that 41 general observers and 20 expenditure observers would be deployed to keep an eye on the candidates and their adherence to the guidelines. He said that the director general of police and Excise commissioner have been asked to appoint one nodal officer each in their departments. 

He said that about 24,000 employees will be deployed in voting and counting while 2,000 employees will oversee the election management. Kumar said that about 18,000 police personnel will also be drawn in for the election duty.
