The quality of water supplied in various parts of Dehradun city leaves much to be desired. This was revealed after the Society of Pollution and Environment Conservation Scientists (SPECS) tested water samples collected from 97 locations in 70 municipal wards in the city from May to June. SPECS secretary Brijmohan Sharma informed that chlorine content was found to be very high in the tap water samples collected from VIP residences and offices. The level of chlorine when the tap water reaches its final destination should be 0-2mg/l but it was found quite high in 41 places including VIP residences and offices. It was 1 at the secretariat, 1.2 in district magistrate residence and 1 at cabinet ministers Satpal Maharaj and Ganesh Joshi’s residence. No chlorine was found in 50 places including Kishannagar, Premnagar, Indiranagar, Vasant Vihar, Yamuna Colony, Karnpur, Hathibadkala, Kargi Grant, Niranjanpur, Clement Town and Sahastradhara Road among other areas. Chlorine was found as per the norms in five places- Inder Road, Madrasi Colony, Tapkeshwar Marg, East Patelnagar and Canal Road. The chlorine content was very high in 41 places including Jhanda Mohalla, Vijay Colony, Race Course, Rajpur, Subhash Road, Tilak Road and other areas. Further, maximum total coliform was found in Sahastradhara Road, Bhandaribagh,  Patelnagar, Premnagar, Vasant Vihar, Kargi Grant,  Transport Nagar, Shimla bypass, Indira Colony, Niranjanpur, Hathibadkala and other locations. Presence of fecal coliform was found in the water samples collected from Banjara Basti, Kewal Vihar, Sahastradhara Road, Transport Nagar, Panditwadi, Niranjanpur, Vasant Vihar and Kalidas Road among other locations. Sharma said that consumption of such water with quality standards below the norms results in a range of ill-effects on health.
