The Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) department intends to propose a welfare scheme for single women across the State under the Mukhyamantri Ekal Mahila Sawrozagar Yojana (MEMSY) in the upcoming Vidhan Sabha session. State nodal officer and WECD department official Arti Balodi informed that the department had presented the MEMSY proposal in the State during the Assembly session in March. However, the proposal was rejected at that time and the department was asked to make necessary changes. The department has recently made adjustments to the MEMSY proposal, which will be presented in the upcoming Assembly session, she added.
Balodi said that under this programme, three categories of single women will benefit, including widows, divorcees and those with disabilities. It is estimated that about 1,17,000 single women falling into these categories will benefit from MEMSY. Women with an annual income of up to Rs 72,000 will benefit under this scheme. The main objectives of the scheme are to empower women and enhance their employment opportunities. Further, the government will provide Rs 1,75,000 to eligible women for starting a business or a self-help group.
