Suggest connecting to NGOs for distributing remaining food to orphanages

In order to mitigate food wastage during marriage functions, wedding venue owners and caterers have opined that non-governmental organisations could distribute the remaining good food to orphanages. Wastage of a considerable quantity of food is a common sight in wedding functions. However, over time, the amount of food wasted has decreased due to increased awareness, said the wedding point owners.

Dwelling on the matter, a caterer Kesar Rawat said that it’s not just the leftovers, the untouched food that remains after the guests have eaten is also thrown away. He acknowledged that about 20 per cent of the food is wasted at weddings due to a lack of accurate estimation of guests and other factors which lead to food waste. The decrease in the amount of food wasted on plates suggests that individuals are now cognisant of the importance of not wasting food. He stressed that in order to avoid food wastage hotel and wedding point owners must put some posters at the venues to make the people aware of food wastage. Additionally, there must be some connection with the NGOs who can pick up the leftover food from the location and deliver it to orphanages, he said.

A wedding venue owner Alok Mittal claimed that there has been a decrease in food wastage during marriage functions due to increased awareness among people. However, to further reduce food wastage, Mittal said that he would display posters with slogans about the importance of not wasting food, particularly during weddings, he said.

DAV PG College professor Prashant Singh said, “It’s true that about 25 to 30 per cent of food goes to waste during weddings. The main reason for this is that people often underestimate the number of guests, resulting in food wastage. Additionally, the wide range of starters and snacks also stops people from taking the main course which leads to food wastage. To address this issue, there is the need for NGOs that can collect leftover food from wedding venues and distribute it to orphanages.”
