It is with pleasure that I write this review for “From the Pen of Surgeons,” a significant and insightful book by Dr B.K.S. Sanjay and Dr Gaurav Sanjay, both renowned orthopaedic surgeons. Published by Prabhat Prakashan, this book presents a profound exploration of topics critical to public welfare and national interest, ranging from healthcare and road safety to education and socio-economic challenges.

The chapters in this book, a compilation of their columns published in The Pioneer, comprehensively address a spectrum of pressing public health issues, including the adverse impacts of road traffic accidents and overpopulation, which continue to challenge India’s public health system and economy. Dr BKS Sanjay’s deep insights into the human and economic toll of road accidents and the systemic consequences of overpopulation shed light on preventable issues that demand urgent attention. Additionally, Dr Gaurav Sanjay’s expertise is evident in his discussions on diabetes, cancer prevention and the critical role of immunity, especially highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This book is particularly commendable for its balanced approach in examining both the personal and systemic dimensions of healthcare. Chapters on back pain, cancer and liver health offer valuable guidance on prevention and holistic management, making this work accessible and beneficial for a diverse audience, from healthcare professionals to the general public. The authors’ discussions on Yoga, lifestyle modification and hand hygiene underscore simple, practical steps that readers can incorporate to improve their well-being.

Moreover, “From the Pen of Surgeons” reflects a deep commitment to improving society through education and public awareness. Chapters addressing the quality of education, the importance of skilled teachers and the empowerment of women highlight the role of education as a foundational element in national progress and individual empowerment.

This collaborative work is not only a testament to their expertise but also a call to action for policymakers, healthcare providers and the community to foster healthier, more resilient societies. This book should be read for its comprehensive, insightful and solution-oriented approach to some of the most critical issues facing India today.
