The police will appeal to the State government to mandate the installation of CCTV cameras in public utility places like hotels, restaurants and petrol pumps among others in all districts to monitor illegal activities. The police would also start profiling drug peddlers at district and State level to monitor them. The director general of police Ashok Kumar stated this in a Press conference in police headquarters on Sunday where he briefed about the decisions taken during the Police Week which was held from December 22 to 25 on the theme of ‘Uttarakhand Police Manthan-Challenges and Solutions’. He said that the department received several valuable suggestions and recommendations during all sessions by police officials and personnel of all districts and the department is taking action accordingly.

He said that CCTV cameras have proven to be quite significant in nabbing criminals in recent years considering which the department is considering carrying out CCTV mapping in all districts. Kumar said, “Only Haridwar district has done 100 per cent profiling of CCTV networks including over 2,500 private and government CCTVs. All CCTVs have been linked to Google satellite network with their respective locations making it easy to monitor them. We have directed all districts to complete CCTV profiling within a month.” He said that the police have observed gaps in certain areas during profiling which are not yet covered by CCTV. This issue will be resolved after complete profiling of all districts. He also said that one-third of challans for traffic violations are being issued through CCTV cameras and the numbers will increase in future with CCTV mapping. The department will appeal to the government to make CCTV camera installation mandatory in public utilities areas like hotels and petrol pumps before issuing them licences to operate in the State. He said that the department will also coordinate with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and railways to ensure proper CCTV installation.

The authorities concerned have also been directed to take stringent action against stone pelting on trains. The DGP said that the department will provide paramedical training to police personnel in State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Traffic police and Fire Service to make them capable of providing medical help to injured during the golden hour. He said that the department will also work on increasing women participation in SDRF. The DGP also said that police have received 90 lakh calls on emergency number 112 since 2019 but many provide false information in the name of emergencies. The police will also take action against such offenders. The DGP said that the department is also working on deploying cyber experts in each district considering the rise in cyber crimes and to set up Cyber Thana and Mahila Thana in Almora and Srinagar.
