The body of an unknown woman was found about one kilometre away from the chief minister’s residence in Dehradun near the Hathibadkala area early on Monday morning. The police found the body at about 5 AM near a dumpster near Kalidas Road which is a high security area. The body had an injury on the back of the head, the face was severely bruised and one of the ears was bleeding, said the superintendent of police (City) Sarita Dobhal. The police detained a man who worked in a nearby public toilet. Dobhal told The Pioneer, “The police found the body near a dumpster under Kotwali police station area near Kalidas Road on Monday morning. The woman appears to be about 33 to 35 years old and was possibly a ragpicker. The police team along with the experts concerned reached the spot and conducted all the procedures. The body has been sent for post mortem and all efforts are being made to identify the deceased.” It is also being speculated that the victim was severely beaten and sexually assaulted before she was murdered. Many also speculated that the victim was possibly killed somewhere else and then dumped near the dumpster in the wee hours. However, Dobhal said that the police can comment on these claims only after receiving a post mortem report. “Several speculations are making rounds regarding the death of the deceased but we cannot say anything certainly without having any concrete evidence. The required procedures are being done. The police have started the investigation and presently analysing footage from CCTV cameras installed near the location. The culprits will be nabbed soon,” she added. Meanwhile, the chairperson of Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) Kusum Kandwal also expressed her grief over the matter and directed the senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar to arrest the culprit soon. She said that the SSP informed her that as per the police’s investigation so far, the woman was a destitute ragpicker. A man who worked in a nearby public toilet used to reportedly let her stay there and also used to sexually abuse her. Kunwar informed the commission that the police detained him in the evening for questioning and action will be taken against the culprit accordingly, added Kandwal.
