In latest Dehradun news, while lauding the monumental role of the women in the formation of Uttarakhand as a separate State, the cabinet minister Ganesh Joshi said that they are now contributing immensely to the development of the State. He was addressing a programme christened “Women Transforming Uttarakhand” as the chief guest. He said that the Veer Naris who had made supreme sacrifices for the formation of Uttarakhand State would be held in grateful remembrance forever by the people here. He further said that while the men are migrating from the villages in search of better working opportunities the women are staying put in the mountain villages, withstanding the challenges posed by difficult geographical terrain, and are keeping their homes, villages, farmlands and culture thriving by dint of their hard work, struggle and sacrifice. The minister also appreciated the works being done by the women self-help groups. “These are becoming the instruments of their financial independence,” he said, adding that they are contributing their mite in employment generation process, organic farming and tourism promotion. He also mentioned the State’s government’s slew of moves aimed at empowering women of the State like 30 per cent horizontal reservation for them and firming up uniform civil code to facilitate gender equality in the society.
