Women voters said that they are seeking employment opportunities for illiterate women and improved healthcare, safety and security in the Lok Sabha election held in the State on Friday. Several women of all age groups were seen at polling stations to exercise their franchise.

A woman voter, Bubly Singh discussed the election and important issues expressing her strong belief in the power of voting to make a difference as a woman. She said it is a privilege to cast her vote and have her voice heard on crucial women’s issues like safety, employment, healthcare and education.

Another woman voter Shanza Merchant said that she cast her vote not only as a civic duty, but also to highlight important issues during the election. She emphasised that there are many illiterate women in the State and country who lack opportunities for economic advancement. She said that whoever emerges victorious should prioritise creating employment opportunities for these marginalised women, she added.

Many other female voters also voiced their concerns. However, when discussing their decision to vote, they noted that family influence played a significant role. Shashi Bala expressed her intention to prioritise issues that have been neglected by the government, like healthcare and safety measures for women. She further said that she voted for the same party as her family and followed her husband’s voting choice.

Notably, among the total of 83,271,207 registered voters in Uttarakhand, 4,012,006 are females. Additionally, during the Lok Sabha election of 2019, there was a notable increase in female voter turnout, averaging 64.38 per cent, compared to the overall average voting turnout of 61.5 per cent in the same year.
