Work progresses on clearing roads, restoring public utilities damaged by heavy snowfall in U’kashi

Following heavy snowfall in the higher reaches in Uttarkashi district on Friday, work was carried out on war footing to clear snow from the roads and restore power supply in the border region of Taknor. The Gangotri national highway was reopened for traffic till Sukkhi while power supply was restored till Jhala village by Saturday afternoon. District magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht appreciated the efforts of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), other departments and agencies involved in restoring the road links, power and water supply in the higher reaches of the district. He said that top priority should be accorded to restoring public utilities in the snow-covered regions.

According to the district emergency operation centre, following snowfall and rain in the district a day ago, the weather cleared in the district on Saturday. The Gangotri national highway has been reopened for traffic till Sukkhi Top. However, the authorities have advised four-wheel drive vehicles with anti-skid chains to be plied on the stretch between Dabrani and Sukkhi Top as a safety precaution. The BRO has deployed mechanical excavators and loader machines at various places to clear snow from the road from Sukkhi Top to Gangotri. In addition to this, the UPCL has repaired damaged power lines and restored electricity supply upto Jhala village with work underway to restore the power supply between Jhala and the Harshil area. A telecommunications team has also been sent to Harshil for restoration of the communication facilities, the officials informed.
