Work has started on the construction of a Bailey bridge connecting Govindghat to Hemkund and the Valley of Flowers. The motor bridge standing on this site was demolished by boulders falling from the mountainside on March 5 cutting off the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund along with villagers of Pulna and Bhyundar from the main road.

On the directions of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chamoli district magistrate Sandeep Tewari had directed Public Works Department officials to visit the site, select the appropriate spot and start work on the construction of a Bailey bridge. The district magistrate informed that work on construction of the new bridge has been started. He said that a survey of the site revealed that there is still some loose rock on the upper side of the old bridge, due to which another site has been chosen for the new bridge. A 45-metre span Bailey bridge is being built at this site. The bridge will be 4.15 metres wide with a load bearing capacity of 10 tonnes. Stating that the PWD has started work at the site, the district magistrate informed that the Bailey bridge will be ready in about a fortnight. The vehicular traffic to Pulna will resume after this, he added.
