World Elephant Day celebrated in Corbett

World Elephant Day was observed with enthusiasm in the Corbett National Park on Monday. Department officials participated along with school students and nature lovers in an event in the Bijrani zone which saw naturalists Sanjay Chimyal and Rajesh Bhatt inform students about the important role played by elephants in the environment. Warden Amit Kumar Gwaskoti informed that elephants are vital for the forests, which makes their conservation a necessity. Other forest officials informed about the special characteristics of the pachyderms. The students offered fruits and vegetables to the national park’s trained elephants on the occasion. The occasion was also observed at the Kalagarh elephant camp. Following a discussion on various aspects of elephants, the staff fed bananas, sugarcane and jaggery to the pachyderms on the occasion.
