A string of programmes was organised at Corbett Tiger Reserve on Wednesday to mark the World Elephant Day. A programme, held at the Aamdanda Forest Campus, highlighted the contribution of elephants to the environment and Corbett’s important role in their conservation. Schoolchildren fed the captive elephants of Corbett with fruits and vegetables and were later made aware of the importance of being sensitive towards wildlife and protecting them.
Addressing the training programme for IBRI participants, director, Corbett Tiger Reserve, Saket Badola said that quick decision-making and the ability to think swiftly are essential while rescuing wildlife during human-wildlife conflict situations. He said that even a small lapse in such cases could put both wildlife and humans at risk.
Corbett’s deputy director Rahul Mishra briefed the participants about the lifestyle and behaviour of elephants and their important role in maintaining the environment.
Meanwhile, a special discussion was organised for children at the Wildlife Art Gallery in Ringora on the occasion of World Elephant Day. The children openly shared their views on issues related to elephant and wildlife conservation.
One child said that humans themselves had blocked the traditional routes used by elephants, making it increasingly difficult for them to move freely and leading to situations of human-elephant conflict. Another child pointed out that increasing noise and disturbance had become a major problem for elephants.
Another child remarked, “There is no animal more dangerous than humans.”
The children also stressed the need for better coordination and coexistence between humans and wildlife along with elephant conservation.
