The World Tiger Day was observed at the Nandhaur wildlife sanctuary on Friday with a group discussion and workshop involving the local community, public representatives and representatives of voluntary organisations on tiger protection and population, human-wildlife conflict, habitat management and the importance of the tiger in maintaining ecological balance.

The Haldwani divisional forest officer Babulal informed that when it comes to Nandhaur, it is one of the most secure sanctuaries for the tiger. At the last count the presence of 27 tigers was confirmed in this wildlife sanctuary along with 135 species of birds, more than 20 types of butterflies, 10 types of snakes and the golden Mahasheer fish found here. Among the wildlife, tiger, leopard, elephant and bear are the major species found in the Nandhaur range. He further informed that about 2,000 tourists visit Nandhaur wildlife sanctuary every year. The main attractions for visitors here apart from the wildlife are the butterfly park, auditorium, forest rest house, bamboo huts, souvenir shop, watch tower and tree house.

Nandhaur range officer Sunil Sharma informed that in order to ensure maximum participation of the people in wildlife protection and biodiversity enrichment, a WhatsApp group called ‘Aapan Nandhaur’ has been started in the Nandhaur range. The local community, students, public representatives, environmentalists and voluntary organisation members will be able to share their experiences, raise issues and discuss possible solutions to the same through this group. This group will work as a bridge to facilitate coordination between the range staff and the public.
