World Water Day event held at UCOST
he percentage of drinking water was always the same but due to drastic increase in population, the problem of water scarcity is being faced across the globe. Stating this, Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) director general Rajendra Dobhal stressed on the need to manage and conserve water resources. He was speaking at the World Water Day event held by UCOST in a semi-virtual mode.
Director of Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Prakash Chauhan said that many cities in the world are in day zero water condition. The surface water is sufficient but proper management is required. “Without any modern scientific techniques, our ancestors intelligently designated three important pilgrimage sites near glaciers- Kedarnath near Chorabari glacier, Badrinath near Satopanth glacier and Gangotri near Gangotri Glacier, thus valuing water. Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh have done good work in water conservation through watershed development programmes since 1997 and crop production in these areas has increased in recent years,” Chauhan added.
