Says the MCD has no space to build public toilets and it could sabotage Doon’s chances in SS- 22
After making it to the top 100 cleanest cities of the country in the 1-10 lakh population category in Swachh Survekshan 2021 (SS-21), the Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ has said that the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will now strive to rank in the top 50 cities in SS-22.
However, the lack of public toilets can prove to be a bane for the city in SS-22 as the availability of public toilets is one of the important factors that will determine the ratings in this cleanliness survey. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has launched Swachh Survekshan 2022 (SS-22) in September this year in which the availability of public toilets is important to get the scores that determine the ranking.
However, MCD is struggling to find space to build more public toilets. The chief municipal health officer Kailash Joshi informed that though the corporation wants to build more public toilets in the busiest places of the city, it is struggling to find space to build the toilets. He stated that there are over 40 public toilets across the city and the corporation has built the toilets in almost all the available space. He said that the corporation is looking for space and will soon discuss the strategy to increase the number of public toilets in the city.
