HC seeks affidavit from State Govt by July 19
IAS officer and suspended additional secretary Ram Vilas Yadav was arrested in the wee hours on Thursday. Acting against him in a disproportionate assets case, the Vigilance department arrested him after hours of questioning on Wednesday. He was presented in the court from where he was sent to judicial custody. Meanwhile, during the hearing on his petition seeking stay on his arrest in the Uttarakhand high court, Yadav’s counsel informed that court that he had been arrested though he was cooperating in the investigation. The high court single bench of justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari has directed the State government to submit an affidavit in the court by July 19. The petitioner’s counsel informed that court that as per the orders of the high court, Yadav had presented himself in the Vigilance department headquarters despite which he was arrested. On the other hand, the government counsel informed the court that Yadav had not cooperated in the investigation. In the past he had been summoned many times by the Vigilance department but he did not appear. He presented himself in the Vigilance department on Wednesday but was unable to provide satisfactory answers during questioning. In the past, the petitioner had contended in the HC that the allegations levelled at him of amassing assets more than his known income were false. The person who had complained against him had many criminal cases against him, said the petitioner.
Earlier, in Dehradun the Vigilance director Amit Sinha informed the media that Yadav had come to Vigilance headquarters on Wednesday. He was questioned at length by officials but he was unable to provide satisfactory answers to many questions. Sinha said that the HC had ordered Yadav to present himself in the Vigilance department with relevant documents but he had not come with the said documents. Preliminary investigation by the Vigilance department had revealed that Yadav may have amassed assets more than 500 per cent higher than his known income. The department had checked his, his wife’s and their daughter’s properties in various cities. As Yadav was unable to satisfactorily answer questions of the Vigilance department he was arrested at 2:15 AM on Thursday.
