Youth speaks up on unemployment in Uttarakhand

With the Uttarakhand Assembly elections approaching in a few months, all political parties have focused their attention on the young voters which constitute an important vote bank. One of the key issues being discussed nowadays is that of unemployment. Recently the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) promised that it would provide one lakh employment opportunities within six months after coming to power. On the other hand Congress claimed that all the vacant posts in different departments would be filled in three months by its government.
To woo the young voters the Pushkar Singh Dhami government has recently ordered that no application fees would be charged from the candidates applying for recruitment drives of the Uttarakhand government till March 31, 2022. The Pioneer spoke to college students and graduates to get their take on the prevailing status of unemployment rate and the promises of the government.
An engineering student from Dehradun, Anusha said, “As a college student I constantly upgrade my skills so I could have better opportunities after college. The very scary reality of not getting a job after college is something that all my batch-mates fear.” She further said that, while recent recruitment drives for a few hundreds of government jobs can be appreciated, these numbers are no match to the sheer number of unemployed youths and graduating students. She opined that more government-accredited certificate courses and apprentices should take place along with subsidized coaching opportunities. She concluded, “While all the parties may make tall promises to us, the students would only value actions while casting their votes.”
A recent Graduate, currently looking for a job, Ashok said, “One of the main problems me and my friends come across is the lack of awareness about government vacancies.” He said that while the government’s initiatives of enrolling more students into the vacancies are important, real change will only happen if the students take advantage of it. He hopes that some credible government page could be launched to keep the students up to date on all the employment developments.
A political science student, Samritika said, “The promises of various parties are nothing new. A student after college is lost in the world, and if he does not have the proper guidance or support, he is considered a failure. Be it AAP or any other political party, their promises are often empty. She hopes that all the parties would stay true to their word and deal with unemployment. She added, “It is not a secret that people easily use their connections to get various job opportunities. The government should curb this by organizing a team to look into such matters.”
