The consistent threat to citizens in areas encroached upon along rivers and nalas in Dehradun especially during the monsoon was seen once again on Tuesday when a young man was swept away by the strong current when the water level in the local nala rose in Shanti Vihar area. According to the authorities, Raipur resident Rohit Goyal (32) was swept away in the nala.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) received information that a youth had been swept away by the strong current while trying to cross a nala in the Shanti Vihar area. On receiving the information, the SDRF rescue team reached the site of the mishap. The team undertook detailed search for the man around the nala and other possible places where he may have been. The team had not been able to trace or rescue him till the time of this report being filed.
It is pertinent to mention here that about a week ago, eight buildings had collapsed in the Shanti Vihar and Sapera Basti areas of Dehradun in the wee hours due to flash floods triggered by heavy rains. No loss of life was reported then. However, such incidents have once again elicited focus on the dangers being faced by residents in illegal constructions and encroachments along riversides and ill planned localities especially during the monsoon.
