With Khatima MLA Pushkar Singh Dhami becoming the youngest chief minister of Uttarakhand, the youth expect him to work towards generating more employment opportunities across the State. Many opined that they are optimistic that Dhami will take better decisions than his predecessors for the welfare of youth. However, some remain skeptical of the new CM’s ability to do anything concrete for youth just months before the 2022 Assembly elections.
“Our new chief minister is educated and appears wiser than the past two CMs. The condition of youths has worsened in the last two years due to Covid-19 pandemic and we all need employment opportunities in our State. Since he is young and probably knows very well about the challenges a person has to face to get a suitable job in the State, I think he will take some action to address the unemployment issue here,” said 24-year old Rishikesh resident Anand Rajput.
Mussoorie resident Shyam Prajapati said that since the assembly elections are due in Uttarakhand next year, the newly appointed CM might provide jobs and employment opportunities to attract the voters. “As part of a political strategy to attract voters for the assembly elections next year, Dhami will probably announce job vacancies soon in government sectors. I know it would not be done with the sole purpose of providing employment to youth here but we have been preparing for years to crack an exam for government job,” said Prajapati. He added, “During the Covid-19 pandemic, the financial instability taught us that only the government employees were most secure financially. I know many who have started preparing for government jobs after losing their private jobs during the lockdown. If Dhami issues the vacancies for government jobs, it will definitely make an impact on those preparing for government jobs.”
Meanwhile, some people opined that even if the CM announces opening of appointment to thousands of vacancies in government departments, it will do nothing for the unemployment crisis in the State. “Every government promises to provide employment opportunities and government jobs just before the election time to lure voters. It is a vicious cycle,” said Ramnagar resident, Dinesh Bisht. He said that the current CM will probably announce thousands of government jobs but it does not mean thousands of people will get those jobs. “He might announce the jobs and the job aspirants will even give the exams but the government might hold the results or delay them or probably a handful of people will be selected. These tactics are not new. If the State government had so many jobs, why didn’t it issue the job notifications in the last four years? It is just a gimmick to attract and fool the youths. The new CM is not going to be any different from others,” stated Bisht.
