100 body-worn cameras to ensure transparency in traffic enforcement proceedings

The traffic directorate has purchased 100 body-worn cameras to ensure transparency in traffic enforcement proceedings, prevention of abuses and video recording to collect evidence after road accidents.

The director of the traffic directorate Mukhtar Mohsin said that the directorate is continuously making efforts to improve road safety and traffic system while ensuring that every legal procedure occurs with full transparency. He said that body worn cameras are used in several situations such as by police for their own protection and storing evidence, or for safety and security purposes and to prevent abuse.

The camera is worn by a personnel so that she/he can record from the very moment when they are being a part of an incident. He said that the directorate has also given instructions to all district administrations to mandatorily use the body worn cameras in enforcement proceedings. 

Besides this, the traffic inspector and City Patrol Unit (CPU) in-charge of each district will also check the video recording of the camera at least once a week. The superintendent of police, traffic of all districts will also have to check video recording at least once in 15 days, said the director. He also said that the new body worn cameras are sim based and all the districts have been directed to integrate them with emergency number 112.

Mohsin said that the directorate has allocated the cameras to all districts considering the current situation and requirements there. He said that the Dehradun district has got 25 cameras and Haridwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar have received 15 cameras each. Besides this, Almora, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Bageshwar, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi will get three cameras each whereas Tehri and Pauri districts will get four and five cameras respectively. Mohsin said that it is a very crucial step in making the procedures related to traffic enforcement and road accidents more transparent for the public as well as for authorities.
