1,200 Panchayat election fraud cases pending in courts: Activist

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Social activist Shakti Singh Bartwal on Wednesday launched a public campaign urging citizens to report candidates who had fraudulently contested Panchayat elections using double voter registrations, adding that over 1,200 related petitions remain pending in Uttarakhand’s district courts with little movement.

Bartwal has released a dedicated email ID sbartwal503@gmail.com, where citizens can submit complaints and documents for legal follow-up. Those with information about candidates enrolled in two separate voter lists can also file notarised complaints before their district election officer or returning officer, he said. If complaints are not accepted locally, the state Election Commission can be reached at secelectionuk@gmail.com or toll-free number 1800-180-4280, he added.

The issue gained traction after two recent court rulings disqualified elected representatives for double voter registration.

The Uttarakhand Panchayati Raj Act, 2016 prohibits enrolment in more than one voter list.
