In latest news from Uttarakhand, nearly four months after the Vanbhoolpura flare-up, the Nainital district administration has shifted 13 accused lodged in the Haldwani sub-jail to the jail in Sitarganj in Udham Singh Nagar district. While the principal accused Abdul Malik was lodged in the Nainital district jail the others were in Haldwani sub-jail. Informing this, the Nainital SSP Prahlad Narayan Meena said that the shifting decision was taken on the High Court order, adding that the Haldwani jail had remained overcrowded with inmates, lodging double its capacity.
Notably, the Vanbhoolpura violence broke out on February 8 when a section of the locals attacked a team comprising police, administration and civic body officers aside from some media persons. The team was in Vanbhoolpura to demolish an unauthorised madrassa and masjid which had allegedly come up on government land. Six persons were killed and over 300 persons were injured.
