Two sisters, aged seven and three years, died after being swept away by strong currents in a rainwater drain in Clement Town on Thursday. The incident took place near Durga Temple in Nai Basti at around 4 PM.
The deceased have been identified as seven-year-old Laxmi Kumari and three-year-old Sonakshi Kumari. The siblings were living with their parents in a rented house in Nai Basti. Their parents work as daily wage labourers.
According to police, the girls went outside their house in the afternoon to bathe in the rainwater drain. The water flow suddenly became strong and swept both the girls away. They got trapped under a ramp built over the drain.
Their mother later went looking for them and saw her elder daughter’s legs trapped under the ramp. With the help of local residents, both girls were pulled out. However, by that time, they had already died.
Clement Town police reached the spot upon receiving information about the incident. Police completed the inquest proceedings and sent the bodies to the mortuary for further action.
The girls’ father had gone to their native village in Bihar and was informed about the incident. Police said that local residents had also confirmed that the girls drowned after being swept away by the strong water current.
Police said that they are investigating the incident and the circumstances that led to the deaths.
