The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Uttarakhand Police are focusing on the misuse of mobile SIM cards in cyber fraud cases. Officials believe that better monitoring and control of fake and illegally activated SIM cards could help prevent many cybercrimes.
A meeting between Uttarakhand Police and DoT officials, which was held on Thursday, focused on quick sharing of information, technical coordination and joint action against people using fake or irregular SIM cards
The additional director general of police (Law and Order), V Murugesan said that the Sanchar Saathi portal was an important tool for citizens. The portal allows people to check mobile connections registered in their names through TAF-COP.
“If a person finds an unknown or suspicious number registered in their name, they can report it and request disconnection. This can help prevent mobile connections from being misused for fraud,” Murugesan said.
Another service, CEIR, allows people to block lost or stolen mobile phones. Citizens can also track the status of a device through its IMEI number and unblock it after recovery.
Murugesan directed the officials to widely promote Sanchar Saathi so that people can check their mobile connections and report suspicious telecom activity. “The move aims to stop cyber fraud closer to its source before criminals can misuse mobile numbers and telecom services to target victims,” he added.
