Twenty youths from Uttarakhand have received specialised training and national certification in water sports following a 15-day programme organised at Tehri Lake in collaboration with the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) Goa.

The training was conducted from August 5 to 19, with 20 trainees selected from different districts of the state. A closing ceremony was held at Tehri Lake on Wednesday. The programme was conducted in three phases, covering life-saving techniques, powerboat handling and tiller operation and water skiing. Each phase lasted five days.

The trainees, who successfully completed the programme, will be issued licences certified by NIWS, Goa. As per the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Council, these licences will be valid in India and the Middle East, creating employment and self-employment opportunities for the trained youth.

The tourism secretary Dheeraj Singh Garbyal said that such initiatives aim to equip local youth with professional skills and create employment opportunities in adventure tourism. “The government is focusing on skill development so that youth can become job creators rather than job seekers,” he added.
