Trio on bike fires multiple rounds in the air in Haridwar

Shots rang out in the Kankhal area of Haridwar when three youths on a motorcycle fired in the air in the afternoon on Monday. The incident comes a few days after a wanted accused shot and injured a Haryana police officer at the Haridwar Roadways bus stand on Saturday.

Witnesses said that the youths fired in the air at different locations, causing panic in the public. The eyewitnesses said that the three youths on a motorcycle rode at speed and first halted at the Jagjeetput bridge where they fired in the air. They then rode towards Valmiki Basti and also fired some more rounds in the air.

Fear spread among the locals due to repeated shots. The police reached the area on being informed about the incident and conducted a search in the area. The police also checked CCTV camera footage from nearby homes and establishments. The footage shows the three riding on a bike and firing in the air.

According to official sources, the police started the process to identify these persons based on the CCTV footage and have succeeded in identifying the accused. The police further said that additional police forces have been deployed to maintain peace, law and order in the area. The people have also been appealed to not pay heed to rumours and immediately inform the police on spotting any suspicious person.

Local residents said that there was an atmosphere of fear and tension in the area after the shooting. The police are conducting patrols and also searching for the accused. If sources are to be believed, the three males are young men and reportedly belong to some gang. On July 6, these men along with a dozen others had arrived on five motorcycles and pelted a home in Shantipuram Colony of Jagjeetpur with stones.

Meanwhile, the superintendent of police (City) Pankaj Gairola said that the youth responsible for the incident have been identified. The police are active in all the areas and the accused will be arrested soon, he said.
