PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

Uttarakhand was once again shaken by an earthquake late Sunday night.  The magnitude was recorded at 4.2 on the Richter scale, while the epicenter was reported to be about 22 km west-northwest of Uttarkashi, at a depth of 10 km below the ground. It is further learnt from the Uttarkashi disaster management centre that the epicenter was near Rajgarhi under Barkot tehsil. The tremors were felt in the Ganga and Yamuna valley areas of Uttarkashi district.

Although no loss of life or property has been reported, the tremors woke people up and sent them rushing down.

It is worth noting that Uttarkashi district is considered highly vulnerable to earthquakes. In 1991, a 6.6 magnitude quake that struck on the midnight of October 20 caused extensive damage to the district, resulting in massive loss of life and property.
