Dehradun police busted a gambling racket in Rishikesh and arrested 40 people from a hotel on Saturday. Thereafter, the senior superintendent of police, Dehradun, Pramendra Dobal suspended the entire police chowki of IDPL for negligence of this matter. The hotel owner is currently absconding, and efforts are on to arrest him, police said.
According to the police, SSP received secret information about a large gambling party being held on Friday in a hotel on Haridwar Road. He quickly instructed a police team led by a circle officer to raid the hotel near Murgi Farm. During the raid, many people were found gambling inside the hotel and were arrested on the spot.
Police recovered 3,356 casino coins, 26 decks of playing cards and cash worth Rs 1, 37,600 from the accused. Several bottles of liquor of different brands were also seized from the location. After the operation, the hotel was sealed by the police.
A case has been registered against all the accused under the Gambling Act and the Excise Act at Kotwali Rishikesh police station. According to police, the arrested individuals belong to different areas such as Rishikesh, Dehradun, Delhi and Meerut.
After the raid and the subsequent developments, SSP has suspended the entire staff of the IDPL outpost, including the outpost in-charge. In total, 12 police personnel have been suspended. The SSP has clearly stated that strict action will be taken against any police officer who fails to perform their duty properly.
