Rudrapur police arrested three accused with 558.78 kilogrammes of ganja on Saturday under Operation Prahar. The worth of cannabis is about Rs two crore in the international market. The ganja was brought from the Sonepur area of Odisha and was meant to be supplied to local dealers in Rudrapur, police said.

The police arrested three accused on the spot. They have been identified as Sanjay Gupta (38) from Kichha, and Ditu Yadav (26) and Mohit Yadav (28), both from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh. The police also recovered five mobile phones and Rs 29,880 in cash from them.

The operation took place on April 18, when a joint team of Rudrapur police and special operation group was conducting a checking drive near Bagwala flyover. Acting on a tip-off, the police stopped a suspicious Canter vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, the police found ganja packed inside 18 plastic sacks and three school bags which were concealed among bundles of rope.

The police also found that Gupta has a criminal record under the NDPS Act. Udham Singh Nagar senior superintendent of police Ajay Ganpati said the drugs were planned to be sold during the Char Dham Yatra and Ardh Kumbh Mela. He commended the police team and announced a reward of Rs 7,500, while stressing a zero-tolerance policy against drugs.
