The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued seven Kanwadiyas from drowning in the Ganga at Kangra Ghat in Haridwar on Sunday. The persons were caught in the strong current of the river during separate incidents while taking a holy dip during the ongoing Kanwad Mela. According to the SDRF, all seven incidents took place at different times during the day. SDRF personnel deployed at the ghat immediately entered the river and carried out rescue operations. All seven devotees were brought safely to the riverbank and given first aid. The quick response of the rescue team helped prevent seven major accidents.
The rescued devotees are from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh. They had entered deep water and were swept away by the strong current while bathing in the Ganga.
SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi commended the rescue team for its alertness, courage and quick action. He also appealed to Kanwad pilgrims and other devotees to follow safety rules while bathing in the Ganga, avoid deep water and strong currents and contact the SDRF or Uttarakhand police immediately in case of an emergency.
