A seven-year-old Rakesh was swept away by the strong currents of Saryu river near Shivalaya Temple in the Kapkot area of Bageshwar district on Monday. The incident occurred while he was fetching water from the river with his mother, Kamala Devi. His foot suddenly slipped and he fell into the river. Notably, the deceased child is a class 2 student. He is still untraced, said police and others engaged in the rescue operation

Roshan Gadhiya, who was present at the scene, jumped into the river to rescue the child. His search for the child for about 50 meters despite the strong currents did not succeed. He attributed his failure to save the child to the extremely strong current. “I tried hard, but failed to reach the child,” he lamented.

The neighbours said that although the family is originally from Lahur village, it has been living in a rented house in Kapkot to support the children’s education.

Upon receiving the information about the accident, teams from the police, administration, SDRF, NDRF and fire service arrived at the scene. All agencies have been jointly conducting a search and rescue operation in the swollen river. At the time of writing this report, the search was continuing.
