After the Transport Department made it mandatory to install speed governors on vehicles to run on Char Dham Yatra routes, it has been installed in more than one lakh vehicles so far. The State transport minister Chandan Ram Dass said this in a meeting of transport ministers and secretaries from all states and union territories on Monday evening chaired by the Minister of Road Transport  and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi.

Various topics were discussed in the meeting including vehicle fitness testing infrastructure, financing of electric vehicles, automation of learning license and to review the speed limit of motor vehicles among others. Dass also shared in the meeting that the department has found that driver’s negligence and uncontrolled speed limit are the main cause of road accidents across the State.

Considering this, the department has made installation of speed governors mandatory on vehicles interested to operate on Char Dham Yatra routes to control the speed limit of vehicles in view of the safety of the pilgrims, stated the minister. Over one lakh vehicles have already installed speed governors in the State. He said that the department has also set up Automated Testing Stations (ATS) for real time monitoring of the vehicles.

Besides this, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have also been set up at 10 sensitive places in the State to manage traffic related issues efficiently in the respective areas, said Dass. He assured Gadkari that the State government is working to implement the guidelines issued by the Central Government to prevent accidents.
