The Rudraprayag administration on Friday halted the Kedarnath pilgrimage temporarily in the wake of heavy rainfall. The pilgrims were stopped at Sonprayag in the afternoon due to inclement weather at Kedarnath Dham as a precautionary measure to keep the pilgrims safe.
A senior police official from Sonprayag police station told this correspondent that the heavy rainfall in Kedarnath on Friday made it difficult for pilgrims to continue their pilgrimage. The rainfall also triggered shallow landslides at various spots on the routes to Kedarnath Dham considering which, all pilgrims were halted at Sonprayag, said the official. She said that the pilgrims were asked to take shelter in view of the heavy rainfall till the pilgrimage is resumed. She said, “Pilgrims’ safety is our top priority. We decided to stop pilgrims at Sonprayag on Friday soon after we got information about heavy rainfall and shallow landslides.
The resumption of the pilgrimage will depend on the weather.” The police also urged pilgrims to plan their pilgrimage to Char Dham shrines after checking the weather reports of the respective areas to avoid any inconvenience.
