A massive fire gutted many huts in Khurbura Mohalla of Dehradun on Monday. The locals informed that a small fire led to the massive explosion of several LPG cylinders, which turned about 22 huts to ashes. No one was injured in the incident.
The officials said that some workers were allegedly trying to burn electricity wires to collect copper metal from them which led to a small fire. However, the fire soon spread to nearby LPG cylinders that exploded and led to massive explosions in the area. According to the officials, about 20 to 22 huts with tin sheds were built in a plot in the slums of Khurbura Mohalla. The locals informed that about eight to nine small and big LPG cylinders in these huts exploded after the fire spread. They said that the police and fire tenders rushed to the spot after getting the information. The fire tenders also had to face difficulty in reaching the spot due to narrow and damaged roads. The police immediately blocked the power supply of the area before starting the rescue operation. They said that most of the people were able to make it safely but some children were trapped inside the huts. The personnel safely rescued children before the fire completely engulfed those huts. The officials said that it took the authorities about two hours to bring the fire under control. All victims have been sent to safe places. Talking about the reason for the fire, the officials said that several families there work as garbage collectors. Some people claimed that a few people were burning the wires to retrieve copper which caused this massive accident. The police are yet to verify these claims to ascertain the cause. The investigation is ongoing, they added.
