The dermatology and aesthetic department of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital has successfully removed a glomus tumour through surgery on Friday. The head of the dermatology department at GDMC, Dr Shruti Barnwal stated that the department recently received a case of glomus tumour which is the first-ever case of this kind at the department. Glomus tumour is a type of tumour that typically occurs underneath the nail. It can be very painful for the individual as it develops under the nail bed.
She further informed that once the department reported the ailment, the surgery was promptly carried out on Friday and was successful. During the surgery, the tumour was diagnosed under the nail using ultrasound imaging. Local anesthesia was administered to numb the finger, following which the nail was removed and a four- millimetre tumour was successfully extracted from beneath the nail through surgery. She emphasised that the surgical procedure lasted approximately thirty minutes. Additionally, she stated that measures were taken during the surgery to ensure that the individual’s nail growth would not be impeded, assuring that post-surgery, the nail growth of the individual would be normal over time.
Commenting about the reasons and symptoms of glomus tumour, Barnwal said that as of now, no specific cause had been identified for the condition. However, there are common symptoms that can help in its identification, like severe pain, local sensitivity and pain when exposed to cold or heat. The incidence of glomus tumour is rare, affecting only about one to five per cent of individuals. She emphasised that individuals experiencing symptoms of this tumour should promptly seek medical attention, as neglecting it can lead to bone issues and the condition may worsen over time.
In addition to Barnwal, skin specialists from GDMC including Dr Bhavya Sangal, Dr Aditya Vashith, Dr Astha Pant and Dr Devi Priya were present during the surgery.
