Post-monsoon rainfall deficit causing above normal temperatures in U’khand

A substantial deficiency in post-monsoon rainfall in Uttarakhand has resulted in the temperatures remaining above normal even as October is about to end. There has been insignificant rain in the State and snowfall in the higher reaches so far this month.
The cold generally starts to set in during October but this year, the maximum and minimum temperatures have remained a few notches above normal in Dehradun and other places in the State. The State meteorological centre director Bikram Singh said that the rainfall during the post-monsoon season has been substantially less this year. “During the post-monsoon season which lasts from October to December, the rainfall has been a couple of millimetres whereas the normal rainfall during this season is about 30 millimetres. So far, there is a 95 per cent deficiency in the rainfall in this period. The deficit in rainfall during this period is a major reason for the temperatures remaining above normal.
The maximum and minimum temperatures have remained two to three degrees Celsius above normal in various parts of the State during October and have even reached four degrees above normal. There does not appear to be any significant activity in store during the next 10 days,” Singh said. Regarding the impact of this weather pattern on agriculture, he said that the crop being harvested will not be affected though if the rainfall deficit continues, dry land conditions may pose issues during sowing of the next crop.
