People from Bihar settled in the State celebrated the second day of the Chhath festival known as Kharna on Wednesday with customary devotion and gaiety. The Chhath Puja festivities began on November 5 and will conclude on Friday. This year, the Bihari Mahasabha has made necessary arrangements for devotees celebrating Chhath Puja in Dehradun.

Informing this, the president of the Sabha Lalan Singh said that the celebrations had started on Tuesday with a ritual called Nahai Khay during which food was consumed only after bathing.  “On Wednesday, they fast all day and eat only once in the evening when they offer puja to Lord Surya,” he added.

Singh further provided details about the preparations for the Chhath festival, noting that the Puja would be held at Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple as well as in Prem Nagar, Chandrabani and Maldevta over four days. A working committee has been formed to oversee the preparations with specific responsibilities assigned to members. The celebrations this year will take place in the same locations as previous years.

To ensure cleanliness during the Chhath Puja, the committee members cleaned the ghats ahead of the celebrations. “Additionally, we submitted a request to the Dehradun district magistrate for security arrangements, ambulance services and medical facilities for the Chhath programmes at specified locations.  Also, we met the senior superintendent of police (SSP) for police support for hassle-free celebration.  Security should be provided to the ghats where the main rituals are to be held. Besides, security of the devotees’ vehicles should be ensured,” Singh added.
