The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh emphasised the importance of preserving, promoting and propagating the Sanskrit language during the convocation of Uttarakhand Sanskrit University on Friday. At the event, he awarded PhD degrees as well as undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to the students, along with gold medals.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that it is a blessing to be born in India. He described Sanskrit as a miraculous language, noting that various tasks can be accomplished simply by pronouncing its mantras. He congratulated the university for its dedication to preserving and promoting Sanskrit, stating that no other medium is better suited for providing comprehensive education. He stressed the need to recognise the potential of the Sanskrit language and urged for further research into it.

He further highlighted that Sanskrit is one of the oldest languages in the world, with a vast body of literature still available today. He said that during the Covid 19 pandemic, he realised the significance of traditions such as folding hands and saying “namaskar” which have been practiced for thousands of years. Singh said that the culture of a nation is its soul, asserting that as long as a country’s culture is alive, its existence is secure. Therefore, it is crucial to protect the Sanskrit language and the culture of India.

Additionally, Singh pointed out that significant centres of faith, such as Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, are located in Uttarakhand. He expressed happiness that Uttarakhand is the first State in the country to declare Sanskrit as its second language. However, he stressed the importance of actively working towards the development of Sanskrit. He noted that the establishment of the Sanskrit University is a step towards reading, studying, teaching and conducting research in modern science. He emphasised continuous efforts in promoting and preserving Sanskrit manuscripts.
