Congress questions appointment of district Panchayat presidents as administrators

Terming appointment of the district Panchayat presidents as administrators in the district Panchayats as discriminatory and disappointing, the former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal has asked the central leadership of BJP to keep a close watch on the activities of the State government.
The Congress leader said that he had warned the State government about the implications of appointing district Panchayat presidents as administrators and ignoring the demands of other representatives of the three tier Panchayati Raj system. He said that the Congress party will support the agitation of the Panchayat representatives on the issue. Godiyal said that the BJP government is taking many such decisions in its own interests but they will have far reaching consequences. He said that the central leadership of BJP should constitute a panel of leaders in Delhi to monitor activities of its government in Uttarakhand and added that he will soon write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.
Commenting on the matter, the former MLA of Kedarnath Manoj Rawat said that the decision of the State government on appointing district Panchayat presidents as administrators in district Panchayat is against the spirit of the Panchayati Raj system envisioned and implemented by former PM Rajiv Gandhi. He said that all the representatives of the Panchayati Raj system were demanding extension of their tenure to cover up the time lost during the pandemic of Covid-19. Rawat said that resentment is brewing among the Panchayat representatives on the issue. He claimed that the decision of the government on district Panchayat presidents will be reversed if challenged in the court of law.
It is pertinent to mention here that the term of the Panchayat bodies in the State ended recently after which the State government appointed administrators in these bodies. The government appointed the outgoing district Panchayat presidents as administrators in the district Panchayats while government officers will administer the block and village Panchayats.
