A massive traffic jam on the road leading to the Rajiv Gandhi sports stadium, the venue of the inaugural ceremony of the 38th National Games caused problems for many sports enthusiasts on Tuesday. Large number of people turned out to witness the opening ceremony of the National Games being hosted by Uttarakhand for the first time.
However the traffic jam at Raipur Chowk and the Maharana Pratap Chowk forced many of them to turn back. Apart from the huge crowd on the roads, the mismanagement of the authorities and VIP culture compounded the problems of commuters on the road.
Amit Rawat, a resident of Nehrugram said that he was asked to park his vehicle on the Maldevta road which is more than three kilometres from the venue of the sports event. “After getting stuck in traffic for about an hour, I decided to return home and watch the ceremony on TV,’’ he said.
To prevent the vehicles carrying officers and other dignitaries from getting stuck in the traffic jam, the security personnel allowed them to ply on the wrong side of the road causing more chaos.
