Snowfall and rain bring temperatures down across State, more in store today

Snowfall in the higher reaches and rain in most parts of the State brought the temperature down on Friday with the maximum temperature in Dehradun dropping five degrees below normal to 19.2 degrees Celsius. Similar weather is forecast on Saturday with the State Meteorological Centre forecasting very light to light rainfall likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital and Champawat districts. Further, light to moderate snowfall is likely to occur at isolated places situated at altitudes of 2,500 metres and above.
The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a mainly clear to partly cloudy sky with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be about 23 degrees Celsius and 11 degrees Celsius respectively.
Meanwhile, snowfall was witnessed in the high altitude regions including those in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh districts. In the Uttarkashi district, the national highway to Gangotri was blocked by avalanche and debris near Dabrani. Debris were also reported to be falling on the stretch of the road between Gangnani and Dabrani due to consistent rain on Friday. The State Meteorological Centre director Bikram Singh said that the snow and rainfall activity is expected to decrease on Saturday. The weather will remain clear for a few days till March 3 when rain is expected in the State.
The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in the State on Friday were 19.2 degrees Celsius and 13.3 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 20 degrees Celsius and 15.8 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 7.9 degrees Celsius and 3.5 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 6.9 degrees Celsius and 4.4 degrees Celsius in Tehri.
