Name display order for owners of food joints on Kanwad route contempt of SC: Cong

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Taking a critical note of the State government’s recent order for the food joint vendors to mandatorily display   names, licenses and identity cards while trading along the Kanwad Yatra route, the Uttarakhand Congress vice-president Suryakant Dhasmana said that it amounted to a contempt of the Supreme Court. He cited the SC judgment in a similar case involving   Uttar Pradesh last year.

“This is BJP’s perennial tactic to fool people by diverting attention from their pressing issues like unemployment and inflation as well as deteriorating law and order. But the people have seen through these divisive gimmicks for vote consolidation,” he said.

He also said that this year too, Kanwad Yatra would receive a warm welcome in Muslim-dominated areas. “This tradition of communal love and harmony must be kept up at any cost,” he averred.

It may be recalled that recently, the State government announced that all food joints operating along the Kanwad Yatra route must display names and registrations of the shop owners. Explaining this move, the State government claimed that this was meant to balance religious faith with public health.
