National Students Union of India (NSUI) workers held a protest march on Saturday in Dehradun against the worsening law and order situation and the commercialization of education in the state. The march went from the municipal corporation to the district magistrate’s office. At the office, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the government through the city magistrate.
NSUI State president Vikas Negi said that the murder of Angel Chakma has shocked the student community. Even after many days, the government has not taken strict action against the culprits. He also mentioned the Ankita Bhandari murder case and said that the current investigation has not satisfied students. He demanded that the case should be re-investigated fairly by the CBI, considering the involvement of influential people.
Negi further alleged that private universities in the state are running education as a business. Arbitrary fees are being charged, and attendance and exam passes are being manipulated for money. He demanded that violations of academic rules in these institutions should be stopped immediately.
The main demands of NSUI include a high-level investigation and strict punishment in the Angel Chakma case, handing over the Ankita Bhandari case to the CBI, independent audits of private universities’ fees and exams, strict action against institutions that manipulate attendance or exam results for money, and strict rules to prevent the commercialization of education.
