High-level SIT formed to probe Sukhwant Singh suicide case

Uttarakhand Police have formed a high-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the suicide case of Sukhwant Singh. He had shot himself in a hotel room in Kathgodam area of Haldwani on January 10. Before his death, he had made a video and posted it on social media in which he accused some police officers of being responsible for his death.
As per the information received from the police headquarters, the SIT has been formed under the inspector general of police, STF, Nilesh Anand Bharne. The five-member team includes senior police officers from Champawat district. The SIT has been tasked with conducting a thorough and detailed investigation into the case.
To recall, the police headquarters in the aftermath of the incident had transferred 12 police personnel. They include a sub-inspector, an additional sub-inspector and a head constable while the rest are constables. They have been posted to Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts under the Garhwal Range.
The police officer’s privy to the case said that a video shared on social media and an e-mail sent by the deceased would be examined carefully. In the video, the deceased had made serious allegations against the police, saying that some policemen had been harassing him continuously for the past four months which forced him to take the extreme step of ending his life.
The police officers further said that all these facts, which have come to the fore, would be verified and legal action would be taken as per the law.
The police headquarters made it categorically clear that the purpose of forming the SIT and transferring officers is to ensure justice and maintain public trust in the investigation.
