MCD focusing on getting stray cattle into shelters, claim officials

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The stray cattle of Dehradun city are being relocated to the shelter (Kanji House) in the Shankarpur area, not to Shankarpur village, as earlier reports had suggested. Official sources of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) stated this in response to recent reports eliciting focus on the condition of stray cattle and the shelters for them in the city. The city currently has two shelters for stray cattle, one each at Shankarpur and Kedarpuram.

The Kedarpuram facility is presently sheltering 289 cattle, close to its total capacity of 300. The officials claim that all the cattle have been properly tagged for monitoring. The Shankarpur Gaushala, which can accommodate 800 cattle, currently houses 421 animals. Considering this, the stray animals that are being rescued these days are being sent to the Shankarpur shelter.

MCD Senior veterinary officer Dr Varun Agrawal said that they continue to take steps to manage the growing number of stray cattle. “We are relocating cattle regularly and monitoring their welfare. Complaints from residents are received and addressed,” he said.
